Expert solderers wont be looking for a £5.50 iron so this review is for beginners.
Quality soldering iron, well made and good hand feel. Recently my soldering consisted of sticking 2 bits of wire together, which is easy, as long as there is flux. More recently I've been tasked with sticking wires onto connectors which is up a level. In particular XT60 connectors which are the work of the devil. Small piece of metal sticking out of easy to melt plastic. These call for expert level soldering. Bought this iron to fill the gap between my old100W (too powerful, melts the plastic)and 20W (too weak) This 40W I thought would be ideal but I struggled. I measured the consumption and found it to be 140 milliamps, which is 33W. This discrepancy I believe to be common with cheap irons so I'm going to buy the 60W, which should put me roughly where I need to be. I dont regret buying the 40W because it is in a different league to my 20W which must be 50 years old.
The conical tip that comes with the iron is a work of art and is simply amazing, I don't understand the science of it but the shank doesn't get hot enough to melt solder - just the tip, which is what you want. More bizarrely the very point doesnt seem to do it either, just the sides of the cone. I have also bought 2 additional tips for the iron at very cheap price, 1 is chisel and 1 angled chisel, so I'm looking forward to much happy soldering. I have much more to learn obviously. A truly great soldering iron at a genuine bargain price.
